You can turn off all unused services making it run better. I didn't see/have to use any application which doesn't run under XP. XP is better for play I think.

I tend to agree for newer games, but definitely not for older ones. [hint]Mouse acceleration problem[/hint]

True. I'm a Win2K fanatic. I can't believe people still use Win98 for serious things.

Some reasons to use the Win32 platform instead of Linux:

[*] Windows is more user-friendly
[*] Windows better supported by the education
[*] Windows can be as stable as Linux (Windows NT)
[*] Most popular apps and games are primarily developed for Windows
[*] Best driver support from hardware vendors
[*] ...

Reasons to use Linux

[*] More secure: Most virusses and worms only work under Windows
[*] Open source
[*] Many free apps included or available for download
[*] Stability
[*] Also runs many Windows software titles using special additions
[*] ...

If you're a normal user there's absolutely no reason to be using Linux. The GUI sux, crashing all the time and installing/maintaining software is way too difficult. The normal user doesn't even know wat software dependencies are :)

A programmer like me can just about understand the manuals provided with popular applications like for instance Apache or MySQL.

If you're a system administrator however, Linux can be the OS of choice. It's cheap, stable, and everything is being configurated very straightforward with simple text files.

I would recommend Linux for use as a server but certainly not as a desktop environment.
