Can't join Tcp server
for some reason i can't join our server. i've tried it few times and it always goes like this. the "connecting" takes awful long something like 30 secs - 1min instead of that normal few seconds connecting. and finally when i get connected i just get a 0.1 sec glance of the map and then "connection failed"
any ideas what might cause this?

You must be having a terribly slow compuer
Timeouts were already increased, but if it takes THAT long to load I doubt you can play even IF you manage to join. I could be wrong though...

That confirms my suspicion.
The player actually does physically CONNECT and JOIN the server before the client machine is finished loading up all required packages. This is very unfortunate, because there is an amount of time (usually below 10 seconds for most of today's machines), where the client is still loading files but not actually in real contact with the server, although the player pawn representing the player has already been created on the server.
Because of that, the server treats the client as connected already, even if the client is still loading. So, the normal network timeouts apply. The client still loading does not respond to the server, so after a while the server thinks the client timed out.
It is true that UTF lengthens the loading process (every serverpackage does) which is why I already recommended increasing the timeouts, but only doubling them! Too high timeouts also have downsides, like countless "ghost" connections and extra load on the server. So if he can't even connect I just doubt that his gaming experience would be any good even if he managed to get in with the already increased timeout.

well, my pc sucks...but...yours deserves to be slaughtered...
i have a 1.2 ghz i think...no i just checked cpuz, its actually a 1 ghz...
i wus looking for parts t'other day tho, and nothing was really that expensive...it will cost me about 230 pounds to get my pc to modern day standard...
@wolf: when you first join a server, sometimes your weapon and stuff doesnt come up until like 10 secs later, but you can still speak to the people on the server...does this happen in the same way?

Yes and no, but I can'T really answer that because much is guessworks here. It does happen most often though if the bandwdith of either client or server saturated.Xavious wrote: @wolf: when you first join a server, sometimes your weapon and stuff doesnt come up until like 10 secs later, but you can still speak to the people on the server...does this happen in the same way?
Unreal replicates (tells you about something going on) knowledge to clients in a set of rules which is based on priorities. Inventory and statistical references (HUD, Scoreboard) are relatively unimportant, so if the server is busy sending you other infos (such as tons of enemies and their missiles swarming towards you) then it might just delay sending you the information which tells you what weapon you carry until things have cleared up.
It is a network problem, one of the few CERTAIN points on the issue. But replication and networking issues have always been the most delicate and hardest to decipher...
