Win 98 over 512k memory

Post by }TCP{Ramses »

Note to TB ..

this is the web page that fixed my over 512k Win98 probs :
http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/3835.html

it points to this site which is perhaps more informative:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q253912/

basically you have to stop Vcache hogging all of the memory by setting a maximum amount of memory it can address to 512 k ... anyways i had no memory probs since :D

With 512+ MB of ram I would advise to upgrade to Windows NT 4.0/5.0/5.1 because NT has far better memory management.

Any newer OS has better Memory Management than win98 ? NT is for working classes, not for the playing masses..
And if win98 isn't able to handle 512K, then I dont wanna see it with 512MB :l

Oh 98 works ok with more than 512K if you change the max handle thingy. I use NT at work though we are in transition to XP there. I have XP for my home PC but I dont use it because I couldnt be bothered learning to configure it when I got this PC. I guess I will have to with my next PC though as drivers can be a problem with 98 and new hardware.

Theres configuring involved with switching from win98 to xp ? :/
Isnt it just updating drivers and turning the firewall off ? :P
Plus removing msn, installing 2000 patches and reinstalling all software..but that should do it..

When you say Home PC, does that mean you actually have 2 PCs and you play on a PC with win98 ? Do newer games still run on 98 ? :P

I have a pc at work for work and several PCs at home for games ... all of the home PCs are 98 at the moment. I have only seen 1 game that is xp only that i might want to play someday. No problems with 98 Rome:Total War :)

Windows '98 that's just soooo ancient... Can't believe anyone still uses that buggy piece of crap.

Had nothing but trouble with it. Even Windows Me was better. XP is the best OS there is at the moment, no doubt about it.

The only problems I have are with my mouse and that is driver related :). I only use it to play games after all. I like 98 because it is more likely to just do what I want it to and doesn't try to be too clever or hide operations from me or connect itself in the middle of games etc. In other words 98 is KISS (keep it simple stupid) for me.

I'm sure that with a bit of time and effort and a fistful of software I could get XP to look and work as I prefer (rather than what Bill would like to force on me) and I believe that it's better better code (they designed it from new so it should be, 98 sort of evolved over time). I will have to use XP on my next PC with new hardware, drivers etc but all I really want is to play games with the least hassle and effort in getting things set up and until now 98 has done the job nicely. One advantage 98 has is that some new viruses (virii ? virus' ?) dont work on it :P

I would even consider Linux if I didnt suspect that there would be compatibility problems with many games. I like the Linux ethos :)

I run Win XP LE now because MS refuses to make a HyperThreading update for Windows 2000. (So I took a virtual crowbar and removed those useless XP additions like media player, messenger and movie maker.)

Well, I'll downgrade to 2000 when possible. Maybe SP5 will bring some goodness)
