Unordered packets per second ?

Post by }TCP{Ramses »

Does anyone know if there any settings in Unreal that might cause (or even cure) unordered packets per second ?

Its kind of wierd, the unordered packets per second start at 0 when I first log on to Unreal and progressively increase to over 400 as I play, and it happens on all servers. Strange as I only get about 100 packets per second :? I dont get a problem with packet loss (any more than everyone else does) or ping, and it happens even when I switch off anti virus and spyware monitoring.

I've done a google search which suggests that the fault might lie with my ISP (ie a bad connection), but I could find no details in the search which I could pass on to the ISP.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I'm going to see if there is a stat net command in 2k4 and check if it happens there. I'll also set up a Win98 connection on my old PC and check the connection with that.

Ask {hLk}Havok. From all Unreal people I know of, he is an absolute EXPERT on all kinds of networking topics. Unfortunately, he rarely visits this forum and probably won't find this post unless I point him to it

Unordered packets are packets that arrive in a different order than they were sent. You might want to temporary disable things like bandwidth management software, firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention software and such.

You also might want to bypass your router if you have any, just to see if the problem is related to it.

Ah the router, yes good idea I will try that (briefly with the software firewall down  ). Thanks :)

Strangely, I found no unordered packet problem with the 2k4 stat net command which indicates that its somehow an Unreal 1 problem, and the old PC (Win98 not XP) also showed unordered packets with Unreal but to a lesser extent (possibly less because the server was unpopulated, possibly because the network card is base 10 not base 100). This all might indicate that the problem is caused by a clash between Unreal and software common on both PC's rather than a hardware problem. Nevertheless I will try a re-install of Unreal using default settings just in case I've somehow changed some setting on both pc's that is confusing things (unlikely though, I dont tinker much with settings).

By the way: You want to run Windows Update (I assume you use this OS) before you connect to the internet directly. An unpatched windows can be wormed within one hour by only let it be connected to the www.

XP updated itself just the other night; right in the middle of a game of course

I have a suggestion. What firewall are you useing. Check your task manager for something like VSMON. I had a problem recently where VSMON was takeing all my Memory, and my bandwidth and and and. Of coarse I had to delete Zonealarm but I have never been happier.

I know that Zone Alarm sucks :P
Cant it just be the antique netcode of U1 ? Things like pl and unordered packets also varied here daily when I used to play regulary. Its an old game after all. Other software problems could be antivirus, firewall, your old Kazaa install or porn dialers :P
Maybe you could also try to change your tcp settings with mtu and all..no idea if that helps any..or try some program like http://www.cfos.de/speed/cfosspeed.htm if it helps anything.. Probably not, but the more the merrier :O

Certainly Unreal seemed to run better before XP raised its ugly head :D
