btw, my auto update from xp has downloaded something(think its sp2) and then it needed to reboot, but actualy didn't, well he went off and on already, but didn't get passed the boot screen of xp

So, i needed to format both my hdd's and i lost all of my files
+ the Playgrounds and {UUT} Euro servers are down aswell.

If it's not too late: DO NOT DELETE/FORMAT ANYTHING
Get another harddrive. Get any of cd rescue linux distributions Boot from cd-rom. Make fat32 partinion on new (added) harddrive and format (reboot if needed). Copy all important files/directories (at least 'Documents and settings' directory) to new partition. Install windows-evil again. Restore backed up data.
In future: make backups!
Ow, and about fresh installation. It is not so easy as ppl think. You have to be smart. Make one partition (ntfs) for system and applications, one (ntfs) for "home" (means: 'Documents and settings' folder), one (fat32) for swap and one (fat32) for tmps (windows' and apps' temp files). Swap should have bigest possible block size, and tmp... dunno depends on apps you use (if they create big tmp files - big, if small - smaler). In feature reinstallation will not mean you have lose anything.

i'd say make backups is the best plan there. its 20 pounds over here for 100 blank disks, and it will only take 3 hours tops to bakup everything.

then just shove it all bak on again after format.

Just make an image with norton ghost of the whole windblows drive and burn it to dvd ..

Then whenever u have something mimilar just pop in the flop and the dvd and ure back on in about 15 minutes works for me

I even prefer FAT16 partitions for my OS partitions if security is not important (solo user). Then I can repair from DOS prompt too

But installing WinXp on fat16 sounds hmmm weird

From what I read, he already lost all his stuff, so its useless to tell him not to format ?

I wonder why you formatted the hdds though, since you just could've installed xp over the old xp again :O
Or fix it..it has some repair option..I think

Also turn auto updates off and only update when you need it..SP2 isnt really needed yet from what I see and hear ;_;

The stuff is still on there if u don't overwrite it or change from fat to ntfs

Don't write anything to that disk. Disconnect ot from the PC and connect it to another Windows PC. Save all files you need. (take the time for this)
When you are sure you saved all: put the disk back, partition it, format it and start again.

(Tip Windows on C, programs on D Games on E etc.)
Make sure all programs do NOT save any files to C (like outlook, my documents)
After everything is installed: make a ghost backup from C
When Windows fucks up again, you can just restore the ghost backup to C and you still have your programs and files on D, E, F etc.
Now burn any important files and programs from the other drives to CD or set them on tape.

Thank god I did not yet had a mass data loss. One time I overwrote one of my disks with an user error in Ghost. (Restore to disk instead of to partition) causing all other partitions to be lost. Fortunately, my personal files were on the other physical drive. I only lost programs and games, which could be re-installed and/or re-downloaded.

LOL yea I keep telling my Dad to NOT use MyDocuments, MyMusic, My..whatever... he's like "what's the difference"... oh well... if anything goes bang, guess who has to fix it again... :-S

my step dads like that. except that he went out and bought a brand new pc with top of the range parts thin screen and everything. all he uses it for is too story his digital camera pictures and play dominoes on pogo.com.

and im stuck with this crappy thing.
