Gamenight

Post by Taz »

Hi,

I missed the 'two weeks' notice once again, but its still not too late to announce the next gamenight. I have now made this topic into a sticky, so I will keep announcing new gamenights in the same thread.

The suggested time and date is: Saturday, 12th of July. 20:00 CET \ 19:00 BST for the UK and 14:00 for Van.

The same voicechat is still up. As always: If you have or don't have a mic, you are still very much welcome. If you do have a mic, don't forget to grant the page permission to use your microphone. Join through this link when day comes 8)

Thanks Taz.

For all those who haven't been in the loop and care to know, there have been, and still are, issues on the server neither me nor Carnage were able to solve. So do NOT expect smooth gameplay, we have intermittent network outtakes, extreme lag spikes, and very confusing log entries in the Machine's Event logger.

I've been monitoring the machine a bit and found nothing that would overtax the system or otherwise be at obvious fault - except for Google Chrome actually causing some of the spikes when it is running - soooo.... don't run Google Chrome.... but who would want to anyway, that thing is garbage.

Carnage has hinted that he may be migrating the whole machine to a new operating system but that will require some time. I do expect he'll announce when / if he eventually gets to it.

I will be sticking in another NIC tomorrow and see if that changes anything.

There wasn't really anything indicating a hardware problem directly, then again.... pigs were reported flying... I mean, it's possible the errors that popped up were follow-up errors that didn't indicate the _actual_ source of the problem.

Incidentally, I have switched NICs in my own main PC just lately too, since it started disconnecting occasionally for no discernible reason. And... it is the identical mainboard as the server's... hrm...

Maybe the onboard things on this one are the weak spot, it's possible. I've had quite a few defective onboard NICs in the past, however, none that weren't bad right off the production line *cough*Intel garbage*cough.

Time will tell I suppose.

My monitoring suggests that the remaining lag is specific to the Unreal server, as the server machine itself remains responsive (remote control desktop) only Unreal server seems to freeze up from time to time.

Not sure what settings could be tweaked to reduce that. I'll need some research on that.

@Van ... try singing the Kidlleativytoo tune. I'm still humming Laurel and Harvey's Blueridge Mountains song for June even though it's July now.

Hello everyone!

-1-
Is it a Windows or Linux server?
If Windows, try to set a higher priority for the Unreal server process. Set it e.g. to 'Above Normal:10' using e.g.: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysin ... s-explorer

If Linux (if I'm right there was an option to run Unreal server on Linux), probably I could manage to spawn a Linux server in cloud (run on demand, autoshutdown at scheduled time) if you would like to move it somewhere. I could manage Linux stuff but definitely not Unreal stuff, too abstract :)

-2-
Could you please share a link to resources / how-to install U1 / UT2004?
For U1 I have an original installation CD media :) , but dunno if it will work on Win10/Win11.
Regarding UT2004, I see it in my Epic library, but it cannot be installed anymore, it's unavailable :(
Any help appreciated.

Regards,
}TCP{aLICe aka }TCP{Whiner :P aka [AL]Newt do you remember that?!

Hello aLICe, may I introduce myself, I am }TCP{Wolf, an expert (non corporate) Windows and Unreal admin since the early 2000s. For further details, see this thread:

I appreciate the thought tho ;-)

www.oldunreal.com

For those of you who DON'T have an installation medium, Olunreal currently links to a LEGAL full installer. Hell... I never thought I would write that statement. That's one of those "hell has frozen over moments" of my life.

An "original Unreal CD" may indeed fail to install on Windows 10 / 11 although results may vary depending on which exact Windows 10 / 11 you have and which exact original CD you have. I usually install my ancient vanilla versions in a virtual machine with an old Windoze first and then copy them outside the VM to patch them higher.

Now THAT's a bigger problem...

https://www.pcgamer.com/epic-is-delisti ... nt-3-free/

2 years ago, Epic pulled all older titles from stores. If you had the title bought before like on GoG it remains downloadable since you paid for it there, but you cannot buy new copies. You only choice now would be to scout eBay for people selling off their physical copies.

The original master servers are also gone now, currently OpenSpy hosts it but you will manually have to edit your ini once after install.
