Since I've had a lot of issues with my old instant messenger lately, and the simple fact some protocols no longer worked/were no longer updated, I finally took the step and migrated.
Pidgin isn't the "nicest" looking multimessenger, but at the moment apparently one that seems to work well. I took the liberty of creating a new pre-made package for Windows 32 bit based on Pidgin portable - it should work with Windows 2000 and newer, or XP and newer anyway...
It comes pre-installed with OTR (secure instant messenging), a few extra plugins and protocols, and I took the liberty to tweak the configuration already a little bit. There's still stuff I dislike or find missing, such as popups - there's "guification" and "libnotify" for it somewhere but I cannot seem to find existing DLLs at the moment.
Whoever cares, here's the link, if you have no idea what I am talking about, just close this browser window

All of the above checksums don't match...!?
Nah, just kidding.
I use Pidgin for years already. It's not the best-featured messenger, but open source, available for Windows and Linux and still gets updated every now and then. And as you said, it supports many protocols and plugins for further enhancements.
