And yes.. Steam was terrible before I used it..Now that I use it, its pretty good
Would still never buy a full price game there, since Europeans always get badly ripped off, but the deals are often tempting enough to snap up whatever kinda game you can get for below 10 bucks :O
They also help Indie Gamemakers out a lot by giving them a platform and letting them offer their games to a broad audience in a single distribution channel.
Whats killing PC Gaming are the high prices, buggy messes as launch releases, hardware incompatibilities galore and Publishers who only look for a way to drain the most money out of anything.

Steam as a concept is good. Steam as an implementation is evil. As long as end user rights are different for games you buy over Steam compared to games you bought anonymously in a local store, Steam and similar ways of sale will only further the industry's goal of control over the end user. Strange how you can protest against ACTA but be all right with Steam...

You might not own the software you buy on Steam, but in the end it is generallycheaper than buying a physical copy and still having to activate it with whatever copy protection the companies are making up nowadays.. Ubisoft Account, EA Account, this account, that account, activate on 3 machines, activate on 1, run this at startup..etc....
I rather have a Steam game that sometimes even removes restrictive drm from games, which you otherwise might have in a boxed retail version.
And if people are in fear of losing their beloved game collection once Steam is gone..Heck, your physical discs wont last forever either :p
In the end I trust a company like Valve more than a mass Publisher like EA, who even make you agree to market your nonsense for their benefit to whoever just so you can play Battlefield 3 or whatever yearly shovelware update they throw at the customer.
On Steam you can just download the game, delete it, redownload it, delete it, redownload it, delete it..You can use it in offline mode, you can even often change the language you wanna play the game in and get automatic updates for everything you have installed, while some boxed games still confine you to ZE GERMAN.
Of course its not as great as having something like gog.com, where you basically can download all games without drm and without the need of having to run a client, but as a whole its at least more favourable than most other solutions out there.

Well, I'm using Steam since September last year and had my objections as well prior to this. However, these are gone now and I just enjoy the nice games and awesome offers they have at times. Don't forget that even if Steam ever goes down for some reason, you can still play the games cause you don't need to be online in order to do so.
What Cee wrote is absolutely correct: These days, new games will hardly come without online protection, i.e. account creation, registration and/or activation. Rather than doing this with multiple companies, I really prefer having a single account at Steam.
