Disabling mouse acceleration in Windows 7

Post by }TCP{Coco »

When installing and playing Unreal and Unreal Tournament on my new PC, I encountered a problem: Unlike UT2004, these older games make use of the Windows mouse acceleration, which practically makes it impossible for me to aim properly. Unfortunately, there's no user setting to disable mouse acceleration in Windows 7 (Control Panel -> Mouse only provides an option to disable enhanced acceleration, which actually doesn't turn acceleration off).

After some web search, I finally discovered this page, which exactly deals with that problem. To disable mouse acceleration, some changes have to be made in the registry. You can download a registry key and apply it in order to do so.

There also is a restoration key, which will set back everything to normal. Well, in fact it leaves out some settings, which probably are dependant from your current config. If you want to be sure about it, I advice to compare the installation- and removal-keys and note down the missing options in their current state. In case you didn't do this and need them later on, I can as well provide my values, which I edited into the restoration key before setting up the new ones.

Anyway, these settings perfectly disable mouse acceleration for me and I can finally play these old games like they're supposed to be played. And even better: I discovered that mouse acceleration is in no way needed for the daily work in Windows - at least for me. In fact, I can hardly notice the difference, so I stay with mouse acceleration disabled. I thought I'd make a forum post about it, as some of you may find it useful as well. :-)

Yep, Mouse Acceleration is probably the dumbest possible "feature" ever invented by M$, or at least ranks under the top 10.

NOTE 1: Some drivers may allow circumvention of OS routines, so mouse acceleration -may- not apply if set in drivers properly (it usually does anyway).

NOTE 2: Unreal 227 has "DirectInput" support working properly, if you activate it, the mouse will actually start responding as you would expect in any new and modern up to date game.

One other thing, these download pages are utter shit too! If you already managed to download the fix, why didn't you attach it to the forum?

I've tried "DirectInput", but it made no difference at all - at least not in UT99.

I'll attach the file to this post...

Yea, it does in Unreal 227 though :)

Probably something about which DirectX version the exe is compiled for...
