Sky Broadband ?

Have any of you UK players had any experience with Sky Broadband ?

Any major problems with ping or PL etc ?

I'm just doing a sweep of my finances and can get a good deal with them atm ... but it's only worth the hasle of switching if they are no worse than the other UK ISP's

Nope sry Rams i am with tiscali (talk talk), but i was thinking of switching to sky........ 1 neighbour got sky and he is impressed compare to BT with it ,...unfortunately we cant get virgin here .

Well I don't like the idea of Sky myself either (dates back to the Thatcher nightmare ) ... but I can get 20 meg package with tv and phone etc at £39 which is £10 cheaper than my Virgin 10 meg thing ... Virgin say they can cut to £43 but don't want to budge any more on price.

Any particular problems with Sky Apollo ? I live just over a mile or so away from the main exchange in town so it should be ok distance wise for adsl from what I've read so far. A bit more googling for me I think

I was thinking the same anyday about sky, but there r some things u have to consider.

The latency period is very high. One way systems between 250 and 350 ms, 2 way systems doublet (very hard to use skype or online games then).

I am not sure but can the weather influence the connection quality?

Go with Sky then m8.
Your getting a better package with 20meg and t.v for a cheaper price.
If you don't like it you can just switch back.

But still, 20meg over 10meg + T.V at a cheaper price. Sounds like a better deal.
These new free view boxes however are coming out in HD now. So you get all the channels in HD and dont pay each month. You might not get some of the channels that you get on sky or cable, but still its all in HD and FREE.

I think sky and cable have milked HD for too long now. Its about time we got it for free.

BUT,
Anyway this is more about the internet.
20meg over 10meg at a cheaper price sounds better. And even if you don't like it, you can always just change back.

The only problem we had with sky T.V is when the weather is bad some of the channels go fuzzy.
I will ask around a few m8's today and see if any of them have sky internet and see what they think of it.

I am not bothered about HD (or premium channels for that matter) as I very rarely actually sit and watch the tv ... my nose is usually pressed against the pc screen, digging up the family tree and planning cycle routes, so the tv is just on in the background

I am considering Freeview, although I do like comedy and documentaries (mostly history) so I will miss some of the channels that Freeview doesn't carry ... even if I have seen 99% of the programmes repeated many times (with annoying stupid announcements over credits and American style 5 minute advert breaks every 15 minutes)

@ PD ... sorry PD, I have only had this TV for about 7 years now so you will probably have a 10 year wait before I get the next one ... The previous tv I had was good for at least 15 years

I just talked to a m8 who has sky internet. He's only got 5.5meg and t.v.
But he said he gets no lag online when playing games and Im on 20meg with Virgin and we both always have around the same ping as each other.

Yes thanks Apollo ... I get about 5 meg on a 10 meg Virgin line at the moment ... I know that every installation is unique in distance from exchange and quality of the phone line, but I think it's best to sniff around to see if a company has a bad basic set-up, or has high ping in games (like AOL years ago) etc. At least both you and Centurio know of someone who is pretty happy with Sky

@ Marwin, I'm not exactly sure what that latency means, I guess you mean higher lag with Sky than other ISP's ... so ping could be 50-70 from Austria (to our servers ?) on Sky ? Is that on a land line or via satellite ? I have visions of Austrian mountain generated weather getting in the way of satellite signals ... obviously a reasonal ping is the most important point for me when playing games

Maybe there is a better technique in use (my informations status is not the newest).

- Take the skynet broadband
- Lets see how it works
