28.10.2009 - Aftermath server migration
Last night, a good number i3D servers migrated from the Rotterdam and Amsterdam locations. The violent aftermath became important and deserves a brief explanation.
The problem
In mid 2004 i3D become customers of Dare Rotterdam. A smooth and successful customer-supplier relationship ensured a smooth and rapid growth of a single rack for approximately 65 racks spread over two locations. Besides this has i3D own equipment racks in data centers in Frankfurt, London and Paris.

From 2005 to 2008 period, there were failures at irregular intervals in the power supply, air conditioning units and the network. Because there are no open issues came after failures and no significant investment had been to trust the vendor declined. However, the prices that increased colocation.
The new data center
Mid 2008 is the choice made for its own data center and began the search for a suitable location, preferably at Rotterdam, where the bulk of our colocation customers is hosted.
The data center is fully equipped for high density hosting. In 2009 began the construction of the data center.
Why move urgently?
In recent months, our customers Rotterdam major problems with the network, access to equipment and communication around these issues.
The network problems were so serious that i3D internal departments have been moved to other data centers. Our supplier never gave good feedback on these issues. The characteristics were: connection drops, packet loss in bursts and low bandwidth on international transits.
Despite the strong growth of our traffic was from our network supplier WeDare not invested in more bandwidth and more stable connections.
Because of these and other reasons, the contract with Dare timely terminated.
Unfortunately did not stop there: we have often seen customers leave after which foreign obstructions before, during and after the move occurred. The record also does not count. The kidnapping of our equipment and our customers is unacceptable. This feeling was reinforced as both the network and rack space by? My party were delivered.
Finally the Spanish Cube has a strange history and has a reputation that many suppliers and deter potential customers.
Following the network problems are multiple colocation customers i3D moved to Dare, and our supplier did not notice this, and the IP addresses from our assigment quietly been put on the new rack to the customer. A supplier in this way customers will take it into competition with its own customers.
In our view we had two choices:
- An emergency move where we take the hardware and the speed of the move depends on our work
- The announced move to the risk that the equipment was kidnapped for unknown duration
There i3D host several major international customers decided to take urgent, for the planned transition date everything in motion. The new data center location had been tested and technically in order for the servers to house.
A situation where our customers can not tell what will happen with our suppliers and customers without fear takes over from the evil and deadly for a company.
Because the new location very close to the old location is located in Rotterdam, has decided to put our entire Rotterdam Amsterdam location and some systems in the night from Tuesday to Wednesday to transfer immediately.

Our office was staffed 24x7 and our business customers and all customers were personally called colocation. Our other clients via the site and email were kept informed. Then just after the start of the move to our website was offline and a long jam at our European VOIP phone provider reduced our outgoing lines to ISDN lines, the communication is not without a hiccup. For this we apologize.
The move itself went well until WeDare reported that the "Authorities went Enable". After the arrival of the Spanish team project i3D Cube turned the trucks of our movers to be driven strongly and were the movers of the data sent floor without any reasons. Both in Amsterdam and Rotterdam i3D staff was present to give direction to the move and was immediately reported to the state of affairs.
Just after 2:00 o'clock, the police called by an employee of i3D. An interview with Dare was backed by nothing - and no one solution seemed close. After mediation by the police is the relocation of more than 2.5 hours delay continued.
Around half past six in the morning, the latest in equipment. The delay is anticipated that the installation work so that in the afternoon took place. We regret this very much and i3D will take its responsibility in this.
Colocation and business customers next week and will call soon receive more information.
Our customers will rest during the week received a ticket with more information and compensation.
