Not applicable in all countries over the world. OEM licensing as defined here is illegal in some (Germany). To clarify this a bit, what actually is illegal is to dictate to the end user that the sale is final (meaning: you are always allowed to sell your licenses on eBay). Since OEM licenses cannot be resold by definition (on their own) but in Germany that has to be allowed, the binding to hardware is at the least questionable in legal status....

Good idea! Windows very often fucks up other harddrives during install you wanted it to keep its fingers OFF!

loool exactly what I mentioned: searching forums, installing stuff etc.
of course no problem at all, but Vista and 7 provide an installation without all these steps.
Wolf: If you install Vista or 7 (or MS-DOS rofl) on "Native IDE Mode", yea, you won't get in trouble, but if you want to use the key features of S-ATA / AHCI like NCQ, you shouldn't

Otherwise it's like using a Porsche engine in a Beetle

Does Microsoft charge more for OEM in Germany, then?

No, not quite correct. The later Intel processors introduced a physical address extension method (PAE), which is a scheme to address more than 4 GiB on a 32-bit system (much like how the C64 used "banks" or "pages" to address more than 256 bytes), however, applications must be compiled for it. Windows is no exception in that they have to define a memory map for the physical address space, and it leaves 2 GiB for applications and 2 GiB for the OS by default. The physical address space is the key here, because on a 64-bit XP or W7, developers have to recompile (simplified explanation) drivers for 64-bit, however, applications run in the virtual address space, and thus you can run 32-bit applications on a 64-bit Windows system. etc blabla

ok I'm off of this discussion - I'm just happy with my W7 system. It took 1/2 hour, it's stable, quick, good lookin and providing all of the XP and Vista advantages. No probs yet, greetz, heinzi (and UT2k4 IS running YEAH).
btw - I'm not a MS employee

So far I heared good reviews about Windows 7. But I won't get it for quite some time. I run Vista x64 here and it runs great as well. (With a fast computer and no UAC the common points of criticism of Vista do not apply here)

PAE does have side effects though, and when enabled you can come across applications that will refuse to work entirely (examples: at least one MIDI emulator driver from Yamaha or the older version 5.1 Connectix Virtual PC environment).

I'm not familiar with current German licensing models. The newest Windows OS's I bought were XP 64 pro and I haven't dared touch Vista or W7 so far.

One effect the legislation had was that a ton of people dumped their (OEM) licenses off eBay all of a sudden, selling them as FULL licenses (which they are here). So you could suddenly pick up a bunch of W2k / XP licenses for cheap bucks.
