I'm going to buy a new PC soon.
Coco said to me that it would be a good idea to show you my choises.

That's what I have in mind (see the picture below):

CPU (at first Dual Core, will be upgraded to Quad Core later)
Mainboard (works with DualCore and Quad Core prcessors, works with DDR2 RAM and DDR3 RAM)
Operating system (I'm going to use Ubuntu primarily)
RAM (4 GB, at first DDR2, DDR 3 when it has become cheaper)
Graphic card (I'm happy with Radeon up to now)
Power supply
Hard drive
Case

Any comments, advices, tips?

Looks nice!

I found here the list of the tested Dimm`s.

Have a look on Pc 6400 Dimm`s used with 1333 mhz Cpu (2 gb module)
Buffalo isnt testet u can see.
I would say to 99% there ll be no trouble, but my choice would be corsair, ozc or kingston.

CPU: Good choice
MoBo: Same
RAM: I would also take a more renown brand, I prefer corsair and maybe you should take modules with atleast 1066 MHz, they wont cost much more..
Graphics card: Yet again a good choice imo
PSU: Again I would stick with renown brands, some good examples are Enermax and Seasonic.
HD: And again a good choice I would say :)
Case: Completely your choice unless you are looking and noise and cooling capabiltys, didnt bother to check for that :wink:

Looks like a good configuration for me!

Looks like the 70 (the smaller one of boht fans) is allways on highest speed. That mean he is loud. You find the remedy at this forum, but dunno about warrantee then ......... if u have it then or not.

pity! would be one of the best or maybe the best 4870 card, but with this mistake: one fan is controlled the other not, is this to reconsider.

Marwin: I chose the RAM by Buffalo, because it has the same specifications as the RAM modules listed in the file of tested RAMs. To play save maybe I should try to get exactly the RAM which has been tested with the board...

The GCard is equipped withwith 1024MB GDDR5.


Kerm: The Mainboard only supports DDR2-667 and DDR2-800 RAM modules.
Some day I'll exchange the DDR2 Dimms with DDR3 DSimms and then I'll be able to use DDR3-800, DDR3-1066, DDR3-1333 and DDR3-1600 Dimms.
PSU: Any suggestions for a safe and quit PSU? (Including overvoltage protection and other useful features?)

@Marwin: sounds like there have been more than one revisions of that card, and only the first revision has a unregulated 70mm fan...

I buyed me once time not listed/tested Dimm`s and the system was then instable, so it tooks time and money to make this system stable again.

I think to get sure that exactly this ll not happen to you, u should reconsider your choice. But`s your choice!
To 99% there ll nothing happen, but it can.

About PSU, have a look about COBA Psu`s.
1. they r cheap
2. they have good valuations
3. efficiency 80+
4. they r made in germany :-P

750 w should be enough, to work with a second 4870 gcard (crossfire) anytime in future maybe :wink:

Thanks for the good tips Marwin!

I'll take a look at COBA Psu`s...

One of the reasons I chose the RAM made by Buffalo were the excellent timings: CL4-tRCD4-tRP4-tRAS12

I didn't find any Kingston or Corsair RAM with equally timings.

Thanks for the link.

The HD4870 "Golden Sample" needs zwo connections for power supply.
The PSU I chose has four 6-pin connections for PCIe and two 8-pin connections.
(So in future I also can upgrade to a SLI system if I like)

Hi!

I got a question: The Core 2 Duo E8600 CPU uses a bus frequency of 1333 MHz (quadpumped). Does this mean that the real bus frequency is 333.3 MHz and is being quadrupled for the CPU? And if so, does it make any sense to buy DDR2-800 RAMs then? Wouldn't they just be used with 667 MHz (333.3, doubled)? Or am I messing up something?
