HELP! firewall technical question :P

I set up a server on a spare machine running XP....

when i enable the XP firewall the server is blocked

1/ How do i set the firewall to work with the server?
2/ Is the XP firewall shit?
3/ If so what firewall do i use?

Hi Baal,XP firewall is like a total condom,using it in conjunction with an unreal server =shit.I would recommend using Norton,zone alarm,or black ice,they are much easier to configure and you can get them for free Good to see ya eh?

Yes the xp fire wall is a bit too good blocks all
I do believe u can customize it a bit but not 100% sure in how far u can do so..

So just go with the one's Minus proposed .. just to add another one Sygate personal firewall .. i have been using this one for quite a while now and it works great ... but then again we all have our favorites i spose

The old Tiny personal Firewall or Kerio Firewall, all freeware and pretty good :/

Never use ZoneAlarm, its teh gay..Also I had problems with the Black Ice thing, not wanting to be removed again, Norton costs money, so crap

But dunno which ports you have to open, but when you use a firewall and start your server, it should automatically pop up and tell you what wants to connect where to, so you can just add the mentioned ports or port ranges to the firewall, which should work (until somebody knows the ports).

You still have to configure the firewall to open specified ports, otherwise nothing would come in or go out :/

Damn cheap ppl who never pay for their stuff, use cool freeware like I do..mostly...and all..etc...

The built in firewall isn't going to work. It simply blocks all incoming traffic. You basically have to install another firewall and open unreal specific ports like 7777. I use atguard myself, a relatively old firewall that has been integrated into Norton internet security. Atguard is one of the best around. I can post my settings if you like.

For normal users, no. For Unreal admins, yes!!

3/ If so what firewall do i use?

Try Norton!

Looks like im gunna have to get myself a router.....'cos the server uses another XP machine as a gateway and i want this one totally hackproof

I've got a copy of Zone Alarm but i've heard that you have to edit the registry to remove it

That's impossible, unless you disconnect from the internet and lock your room. NOTHING is absolutely hacksafe, forget that idea...
