Disconnections

Post by [COCO] Transpulsar »

Is it possible that the Reason for my often Disconections is my PC? Is it maybe overloaded? I will buy soon a better one, could that then be better?

Athlon 3200 32 bit
Ati 9800 Pro
1 Gig Ram

at the moment.

Hi!

There are several possible reasons. I experienced some major lags on the server lately. Some of them had a duration that lead to all players being kicked, because the server "thought" they were no longer connected. But in case you get disconnected alone, the problem will most likely be on your side.

I can't say much about your ISP, 1&1, because I never was their customer. You should be able to find out about it by performing some continued pings or traceroots and see if you get packet loss (and where they occur). Do you know if you get disconnected from the entire internet or just from the gameserver? Do you use WLAN at home? Maybe the signal is too weak or gets disturbed somehow.

Do you get disconnected from the game, or does the game shut off? It could be the 1&1. I have heard not all providers, regardless of promissed ping, allow for the internet game playing, and I believe, 1&1 was one of them. Contact them and tell them your problem.

Hmmm, 16000.... I wanted (and have) the 6000, but my area only allows the 3000. Must be nice. :)

If you're new to 16000 and the disconnects happen often over the day and only since ur at 16000, then I'd try a different router first :P

At first: I pay for 16000, but I get 8000  . But as far as I know, I have fast path. The complete internet gets disconnected, the game don´t crash. But that only happens at playing UT. Or short after this. Maybe you´re right with the router, at the moment I use a Fritz!Box 7113, wlan is off. I have another old one: Fritz!Box fone freenet.edition. Maybe it will work better?

Hi!

It's easy to tell if you have FastPath or not. You can open a DOS Command Prompt (German: Eingabeaufforderung) and type:

Code: Select all

tracert heise.de
You can use any other server, of course, this one is just an example.

The output will show you the delays to all hops inbetween. Simply take a look at the 1st or 2nd hop (depends on your home network), which is the way from your home to your provider. If you have a value of about 45ms, you don't have FastPath. With FastPath, the value should be between 5 and 15ms.

For DSL speed above 6000 Mbit/s, you'll need a modem capable of the ADSL2+ protocol. Most older modems don't have this feature. So it'll depend on the capabilities of your old FritzBox if you can use it at all.

It´s all 14 ms :) . The currently Fritzbox I got from my Provider is a new Modell and has ADSL2+.

This is ADSL+ which always has fastpath, because it has dynamic speed configuration. Meaning: during the handshake phase when the connection is established, the fastest parameters are negotiated.

Fastpath is only for the "old technology" ADSL, at speeds 1000 to 2000. In the USA, they give you FP whenever you want it, German ISPs tend to never allow FP for speeds greater than 2000, because they say it gets unstable then. The reason behind this is simple: there is no dynamic speed negotiation here (unlike in the USA, where standard ADSL has that oo) so all parameters are set, instead of optimized during handshake.

I'm amazed you can play at all, because you cannot have FP this way. If I were you, I'd get 2000 and FP... but if everything works out for your right now don't change a thing lol!

I was also wondering about that. I had the 1000 package, and was palying nicely. But since I have my 3000/6000, I have not noticed anything better (in game). Jochen has the 2000, and seems to run a bit faster :) I want to get the 16000 as soon as it comes in the area. Then the hell with the Fastpath.

***EDIT***

BTW I am up to 48 ms

Hi Frank!

48ms means you definitely don't have FastPath!

By the way: Your bandwidth doesn't affect your ping at all! Bandwidth just means how many data can be transmitted in a given time. Your ping is the delay until the first data packet you sent arrives at the destination.

Let's say you push the fire button and want the server to know about it. A fire event is just a small information (fits into one packet). So bandwidth doesn't help you at all, because you don't want to send more than one packet. But it's important how long it takes until your packet arrives at the server, because events from other players might arrive sooner and the server might update their position (so it isn't synchronous with your view of them). When your fire event finally arrives, the server checks if there's a target at the location you've fired at, but since the location of the player you have aimed at has been updated inbetween, there's no target anymore and the server reports a miss.

For gaming, it is most important to reduce the delay for information exchange with the server. And this is a matter of ping latency. See, if you give a fire command, it takes 48ms until even your ISP knows about it. Then add the time from your ISP to the server and all the way back (including another 48ms from your ISP back to you). This way, you're easily 0.1 seconds behind what happens on the server. :?

I understand that, and thank you for the perfect explaination. But a faster, say around a 16000 conection, should be fsater than a modem, with only 56? If we both send a fire command at the same time, mine uploads faster than his (saying we both live next to each other, and have the same provider, t-online :? ) than it should reach the server before his does?!?! Which in turn sends it back to me faster, and I should have a hit before he does. But on the other hand, a chain is only so strong, as its weakest link. Meaning, if me, him and a bunch of others send their shot to the server, it is the servers "connection speed" , up and down, that should effect us all, making us all the same speed. I am so confussed.

No need for further explainatiuon on this. ;) But I would like to know how to get this "MS" down. And I do not want to go dackwards, and get a slower connection. HELP!!!!

Hi!

Well, of course the time it takes to transmit a packet is also considerable. But the packets are usually short and it doesn't count that much. In case you meet the minimum requirements (may it be 57600, ISDN or whatever), you can usually play well. I remember playing UT with ISDN, for example, without any problems.

The differences between simultaneous events sent over connections with different speeds are usually small due to the small packet size. Several networking mechanisms like choosing alternate routes, packet drops, queues, priorities, etc. can mix things up at any time. Additionally, it's up to the game engine how to handle simultaneous events. This might be completely different in different games.

Well, concerning your ping problem, it seems that you have to choose between a faster ping or a faster speed. Most likely, the characteristics of your phoneline don't allow both at the maximum at the same time. But to be sure about it, I'd suggest you asking your ISP.
