uninstall IE?

Hi Nosh!

Where's the problem? You don't need to uninstall IE to use Firefox. Simply configure Firefox to be the standard browser and tell IE not to ask again if it should be the standard browser.

Personally, I have Opera, Firefox and IE installed. I use Opera for almost everything, but occasionally, Firefox or even IE come in quite handy. Some pages (as Cee wrote already) can only be displayed with IE - primarily those which use ActiveX content (the URLs genrally end with .asp). So uninstalling IE istn't really a good idea.

There's absolutely no problem having more than one browser installed! Simply configure a special key of your keyboard to start your preferred browser (unless don't have a standard keyboard without any special keys).

hmm.. ok..
the thing is .. i had some trojanes on my computer.. and they used ie all the time .. they opened it allown played music but there was just the process of ie not a window.. i solved the problem by killing the problem all "strange" startup processes =)

There was some great info in here about this. Slappy, good work, but i think there is a problem with that. I believe when/if you update windows, the IE will automatically turn back on, or you cna not update at all. I had trooouble with the IE awhile ago. It would not start up at all. I mostly use IE on the laptop, but on my computer I use FireFox. But sometimes, as stated by others, IE is needed. Do as COCO said and set your Firefox to standard, and if one of those baddies pop up, just click it away.

BTW, you should not have Trojans on your computer. Just use the proper Antivirus software, and clean up the system about once a week with a cleaning tool like XP Clean. Good luck man.

There is a professional tool (commercial) called "XP Lite" that can uninstall everything, including IE, Outlook and all the other useless shit.

However, if you uninstall too much you will render your system entirely useless.

If you just want to delete the IE exe without it reappearing, get the freeware "X-Setup" and use it to disable the Windows File Protection (this is also potentially dangerous though and X-Setup will warn you before committing any dangerous registry changes).

With that said, I do not recommend to uninstall IE since it is closely tied to (too) many of Window's internal functions. If your system is already bogged down with Trojans, reinstall from scratch - always best - and make it an entire OFFLINE install. Do NOT go online before your install is done and over with the latest Fixpacks and everything (what: you use Autoupdate and do not have the service packs offline as files?? Shame on you!).

I also prefer Opera, but at the moment Firefox has the best JavaScript engine. Many sites currently work best with Firefox (including eBay) even over IE...

Leave it to Wolf to be the "Wise" one. GJ and yes, I do update now from MS because I have no time to look through the net or wait for it to come out in a Mag that I trust.

I would be VERY careful with useing programs that uninstall MS programs. I have run into trouble doing it that way, and end up reinstalling anyways. A reinstall is a good thing, but the e-mails keep coming, and the IP is also the same. If You want to do it right, Reinstall, and get a new provider. What a wonder it is to get no garbage in your mailbox. Good luck with it.

Keeping a Windows computer clean is so easy...

1) Stay offline during install (means: PULL TEH NETWORK CABLES!)
2) Install OS and updates
3) Disable / unininstall all useless clutter
4) Install Firefox / Opera
5) Install packet filer / firewall and block ALL incoming (SYN) TCP traffic, also block incoming/outgoing M$-ports TCP and UDP (13x and a few more I don't know off my head right now)
6) Browse with no plugins and no JavaScript (and not with IE obviously) - this is why I love Opera, if I need Plugins/JS, I can enable it for one page in 2 clicks and after that disable it again
7) Use an eMail program not based on IE renderer (better: forcibly display text only)
Never click on links in eMails
9) automatically delete all eMails with attachments (if you need somebody to send you something you can always temporarily whitelist)

Did you notice it does not say "run a virus scanner in background" anywhere? Well that's because you don't need one...


There are countless better procedures for an "internet PC" (boot knoppix, use virtual PCs etc...) but that's the basic Windoze oriented one.
