Securely wiping external harddrives

Post by }TCP{Wolf »

Hoho,

I have a couple of USB drives I need to wipe clean so data cannot be restored. I would use DBAN but from what I can see it can only do internal drives, and I do not want to open the external cases and mount them internally, then put them back in the case...

Dban was my first thought, but I am not sure what to do with your usb drive.

Just get a big magnet and hold it there for a few minutes, that shohuhld do the trick. Welllll.... it works in the movies, don't it? :P

GL and I would like to hear if you find someting.

Hi Wolf!

Well, I would simply use a partitioning program like Acronis Disc Director Suite. They usually have functions for low level formatting and can also access harddrives connected via USB, Firewire, etc.

Many PC utility collections come with a program to securely delete a file or partition. I use a SecurErase bootdisk which used to come with vCom SystemSuite. Norton Utilities also used to have a smilar tool, but I haven't used it since version 2001.

By the way: there are tons of utilities for this. Both commercial as freeware.
