Windows Installer -_-

Post by }TCP{Cee »

Good evening, spam forum.
I browsed the net for my problem and failed, so I rely on you ppl to save me :P
Whenever I'm trying to install some program, which uses msi stuff, I get some error telling me that Windows Installer cant be accessed and what not.
Now I dont wanna reinstall windows and repairing it (-_-) didnt fix the problem either. Its probably from the time when that adaware crap deleted some registry entries of mine and thus removed programs from startup.
There were some solutions on the M$ site like delete the msiexec thing or something about msiexec /regserver. Nothing worked. Is msiexec somehow autostarted by the system ? Or something related to it ? :P

Hi Cee!

Sorry, I don't know anything about msiexec. But in this situation, I would try two things:

1. Check if the Windows installer is available as a seperate download in the most recent version from the Microsoft website. Maybe, you can simply install a newer version over the existing (and corrupted) one and thus repair it.

2. In case you're using Windows XP (don't know if other versions also offer it), you can boot the Windows install CD and select Repair instead of a complete install. This should copy all important files of Windows to your C: partition again.

I did both 1 and 2..When I reinstall it, it seems to install it but the error is still there, so I dunno if theres some registry setting missing ;_;
And I repaired it as well and that also didnt fix it..it obviously replaced my old files, but that didnt seem to help.. Do you have msiexec as some autostart object in msconfig ? :/

I cant even run IE anymore, it just keeps opening "Windows Installer preparing to install" windows -___-

Hi!

Hmm, this really sound like a serious problem. Did you check if there's a removal tool from MS for the installer? Perhaps, some settings became corrupted and these aren't refreshed when you reinstall it.

No, the only thing I have is UpdReg.EXE. No msiexec anywhere.

The problem with the IE is quite strange, too. It seems that it also became crippled. Maybe, your spy-/adware removal tool removed some third party extensions for the IE and damaged the installation.

Altogether, I think it doesn't look very good, I'm afraid. You probably can't avoid to reinstall windows as a whole. :-(

STOPPPPPP!!!!!

Do a System wiederherstelung.

A "Go Back" in english.

The file that you deleted was corupt, and without it, you can not repair or reinstall it, as far as I know. I have had this problem b-4. Now the only problem is, when this works, you have a virus on your computer, that has infected the registry. Download XÜ Clean, and try to get rid of it that way. If not, there are other things we can try, but I would suggest right now to save what you can and do a "Government...Format C:"

Call me when you need help. :-)

Why cant programs store their settings in ini files like they're supposed to, instead of the damn registry which always gets lost -____-

try to install a fresh copy of service pack 2(even if the windows instalation includes it) + all the updates, if it doesnt help, try norton utilities system check, it fixes broken links, missing .dll-s, etc... to some degree... you're despered, right? :P

Cool Cee.
It is recommended that you reinstall XP once every 6months to a year.
(If using it to download, surf the web,installing/uninstaling games, demos etc)

True, that's the weak point of most Windows, unfortuneally :(. Its good to make backup ,so it will bring your old setup, before reinstall, so you propably won't have to install all aplications again.
