i had a discusion on a local forum, it was about e-sports. many people say, thats for fat nerds, and its not comperative to real sports, because of the lack of physic chalange and events(??!). ok, we could say, it's not a big thing, for a pro-gamer to brake hes back, hurt hes eyes, get artritis in hes wrists,... lets just say, there is NO physic chalanges... what about gaming events, the "cups" or whatever, pro gamers(E-sportsman) earn up to 500.000$/year (i checked for Korea), the best of the best even more.. that sounds a bit more sporty, does it? a big croud watchin' you compete, geting paid a ton of money for victory, having fan clubs... yey, its sporty, aight? ^^

e-sports are not real sports, but there are parareles, and if folks don't see them, i say they're blind, if they say, all pro-gamers are lifeless chunks of fat (btw, does fatal1ty look like a 150kg no-life turd to you?), they should check the scene a bit more, it's just not true!

i'll be glad to read your opinions about e-sports: are they similar to "real" sports, can they get a status of an "real" sporting discipline?(air-gun shooting, snooker, even darts - they are all officialy a "REAL" sport, and there are manny more, that don't require some real phyical effort!)

But if done for money .. i don't see why it shouldn't be called a sport just like anything else

I dont really pay any attention to any sport.
AS far as I can see,sport is all about money nowdays.
For example Football is not a sport,it is a business.
Players being paid Â£10-20,000 a week just to be a sub and sit on the bench.
Obscence!

Well, I think it's the same with esports as it is with other sports: It might be good for you if you do it occasionally, but it definitely gets unhealthy if you go professional.

I still have a real life.

Yes I think shooter games can be considered a sport, they increase adrenalin, heartbeat, competitiveness, team spirit etc and are very good at developing hand/eye co-ordination and reflex. If you are healthy in body you are more likely to succeed.

Strategy and role playing games less so (at least as I play them

). They are more likely to develop brain activity, problem solving and analytical skills.

Kay is right, if you take anything in life to extreme its unhealthy, like drinking, politics and religion for example.

As we all know, computer games often get the blame for physical inactivity in the young and for the occasonal nutter who commits some horrendous crime.

But games in moderation are very good for you in increasing well being and as an outlet for frustration in real life, and therefore are good for society in general. The crazy headlines in stupid newspapers are down to ignorance, scape goating and an unwillingness to face up to the fact that there are ills and inequalities in society that should be addressed. If games were so bad half the population would be attacking the other half (Glasgow excepted:P) Sorry a little bit of politics there

Slappy is also right, what is the point of following a team when none of the players come from the area that the team is based ? In my world (scary as it is) there would be a rule that footballers had to live in the area for at least 6 months to a year before they could be considered for the team

I tend to be more interested in watching individual sports like snooker, darts, fishing

i say its worth to call it a sport.. its like formel1, they also just sit there and cruise the car around the circuit ^^
even chess is called a sport ^^

Formula 1 drivers have to be super fit to withstand the G forces, weight loss and physical knocks

I'd say chess was a game rather than a sport though.

It's really a business like any other nowadays. The last World Cup (I think it was, with all the cups and events going on I really lose track especially since I don't care) in Germany was a successful political strike to rekindle a feeling of nationality in the broad masses (reads: yellow press readers) and also influenced economy enough to give it a small boost.

Of course, like all political measurements, it has been a short-sighted and shortlived one.

Maybe in ancient times, sports really were just that... an activity pursued for the fun of it, or bodily activity. But that's history, and it's the same with computer games or "esports". The term "gaming industry" is no coincidence after all....
