How to do a Tracert (lag / packetloss test) :!:

Post by }TCP{Carnage »

As promised here ya go

It is quite straight forward u download the little program attached and unzip that one and open it .

Then add the server ip in the box on top and click start
Let it run for a couple of cycles so u can see a clear difference as where things go wrong (see screenie)

As u can see there i get a no response from the first hop but in my case not a problem simply coz my router doesn't respond to things like that so it basicly get's interesting at hop 2

I've let it run 100 times (actualy goes quite fast)

The thing u should be looking for is the Sent and Recv parts because this shows u the packets send to the server and the number of packets who actualy arrived .. thus the name packetloss

The other 3 things next to that are the ping times
Don't take these to seriously because some routers have a low priority to ping's and will wait a while to respond .. this is no problem as long as all the packets get thrue ..

Kee with that sorted let's take a look at the screenie i made
I did a tracert to the New 32p ONS server and as u can see there where no packets lost , which is how it is suposed to be :)

the ip's of our servers are :

The 32 p Onslaught Server : 82.94.203.162 .. port not needed:8318
The TAM #1 Server = 82.94.203.162 .. port not needed:8218
The TAM #2 Server = 80.60.208.39
The TAM #3 Server = 85.146.168.150
The 12 p Onslaught Server = 85.17.209.25

Hope this helps a little bit

Cheers
Car..

People of the world want things to be easier, like that..you dont go to tv to turn it off, you have a remote control for that, right :P

It's like a sign of..lazyness :\

And some people dont even know of those command lines, like the Cee..who was a worthless toad who couldnt figure out why my ping was messed up, but Carnia came to the rescue :P

I suspect that even Cee's toilet has a GUI!

So here's my tracert. It seems like I dont get packetloss at all but I still keep teleporting when playing? What could it be, ZoneAlarm?

True, no packet loss, but apparently some evil ping spikes. The "worst" column shows pings around 1000. :-P

You could probably try to verify this by opening a DOS command prompt and type:

Code: Select all

ping -t 85.17.209.25
It's the IP of FunHouse #4 - you can try any other one as well, of course. However, just let it go for a minute (or even longer) and see if the ping values are constant or if you get spikes similar to the ones in the "worst" colunm inbetween.

P.S.: You can stop pinging with CTRL+C.

I got rid of Zone Alarm a long time ago. I was having the same problem. There is a package that keeps getting larger as you play. I do not remember anymore what it was called.

Zone Alarm can clash (or used to clash) with some of the free anti-virus programs ... it seems to work fine with Avira.

Had that one also. I got rid of them both, back around 2006-2007, because it was slowing Unreal down to a stop.

I can verify this with Jochen's (Krabbelricher) computer. He also used the Avira, and the Zone Alarm.

I do not remember the name of the file that kept on getting larger as the game went on, but if I saw it I could tell you right away.
My computer had stopped working, and then I used my second screen to find the problem with the "task explorer". That particular fie
went beyond the compacity of my system, and crashed unreal.

Must have been Zone Alarm then, because I'm using AntiVir even on my laptop and can usually play without problems.
