VIRTUAL RAM - MAKE YOUR COMPUTER RUN FASTER...MABEE!

Post by }TCP{Benator »

Ingame someone asked how to see what their virtual ram settings were, so i thaught i'd add this tutorial.

to get to the virtual ram section

-right click my computer
-press properties
-click the advanced tab
-click settings under performance section
-click the advanced tab on the menu that pops up
-at the bottom under virtual memory you will see how much virtual ram you have.

-to make your computer go faster, click change in the virtual ram section.
-Sellect the drive you want your virtual ram on, i use my main HD and an external drive.

-IF YOU HAVE A HARD DRIVE SMALLER THAN 20GB DO NOT DO THIS, IT WOULD BE COUNTER PRODUCTIVE-

-sellect the drive(s) you want to place V-RAM on and sellect custom size, and set the initial and max size to 4096, or if you have an HD smaller than about 40GB set it to 2048.

-this basically takes 2/4GB of space from the sellected drive and uses it as ram, transfering files between this space and your hard ram.

-If you se the paging file too high it may have serious adverse consequences, however as far as i know it is 100% safe!

Well actually I don't think that gives that much effect.. You can feel that ur computer REALLY runs faster after you installed a ram of 512 or higher..

you already can notice an effect after you restart PC after 4 days when it was instantly On.
dunno if it deletes useless data from your virtuell memory or RAM after restart... or maybe both :p

Well, GNU/Linux usually uses a swap partition :)
I have a 1gb swap partition and 1gb real ram

Or just let windows handle the virtual ram like any normal person does :P

this is desinged to increase performance on what windows has set as default, windows doesnt know how to think it just follows a loop of commands.

I had it manually changed to 768-1536 mb here and the Sims kept telling me that it needed to increase the virtual memory file all the time. Now ever since I set it back to let Windows manage it, that didnt occur anymore.
Performancewise it shouldnt make too much of a difference, since Windows does most likely use the standard of 768 mb, which seems to be sufficient on systems with 512 mb - 1 gb ram and if more is needed it'll actually increase the file size anyways.

its pointless setting that range as i think the default is 1536, to give it a boost you would need to put the min/max both to 2048/4096!

try it, it also helps if you do it on an external drive.

VP
2nd hard drive, sata if possible.Make a 6gb partion at the front of drive, format it FAT32,then tell xp to use that as vp and turn off the one normally that sits on your windows drive.
(set VP min and max to 4096mb)
This also helps when defragging.

If you have enough ram,vp is not normally used.
