Or not .. this evening it was even worse then the other one ..

Either they get it sorted or i think it would be time to think about a new .. better / cheaper host .. this is basicly worthless .. everytime u finaly get the server full it starts playing like crap again and the people obviously leave :evil:

blah blah blah... what plugins u installed on the server blah blah..one of the server running on linux1 the other on linux3 (?)...we installed the newest patch on the testserver blah blah.. keep testing both servers and report us which is running smoother...

im really about to change provider. actually i just chosed this one couse they was the only one who hosted unreal1.
they are other little things here too that fuckin me up anyway...

I realy apreciate the server u rent but

It is Your money and your server and well since it costs enough
I would certainly expect a better overall performance
The connection and all seems fine it just seems the server just doesn't cut it when we reach the 20 players.

Kee i'll fill ya in on what it installed on the server mod wise and so on ,
since i have also been tinkering around with it quite a bit

Both servers have the exact same mods installed and are set up exactly the same network wise / ticks / netspeed (except the 3369 patch on server #2)

Network is basicly standard
ticks are set to 20 (standard)
netspeed is set to 10000 (was set to 15000 when u got it)

As for the mods

The ones that are currently active are
The Mirc mod (basicly relays info from the server to the irc)
The UAdmin mod (corrects the teams if needed or if players type Teams)

Those are the 2 active on both server during Onslaught since that is where the most problems seem to be

On server 1 u can also select other gametypes .. mostly TDM and 1 CTF option .. these then will also use the UTComp mod ( not in ONS coz that doesn't seem to work right unfortiunatly)

That's basicly all i can tell ya i think

If u need some things done / tested .. just lemme know :)

Well with all removed it does seem to run better ..
it still has it's moments but they could also be on my side

Also i noticed that some maps just work better then others .. odly enough
some custom maps just do better then the standard one's .

Hmmz i will add the Uadmin mod again when the server is not full :shock:

Kee little update on this

The Server #2 is running exelent at the moment with the UAdmin mod and a talk mod installed

Server #1 has the same and the UTComp (but only in tdm games)

Dunno how #1 holds up now coz i haven't been there yet when it was maxed out .. did ok at 17 players though ,..

Let's hope the problems are fixed now :D

So this is where TCP Clan is from.

Well, I wanna introduce myself: I'm the one you're arguing with at raies.de - your admin, if you want it that way.

Since the feedback coming from our customer renting the server (don't know if I can tell his name here, but you surely do know) is somewhat rare, I just tried looking around for some kind of direct contact.

Feedback here is somewhat negative for us. Well, I see your point, but there's something I want to mention about this:

I asked direct questions about mods you're using. I even explained that I want to know for your server is messing up our machines quite much. Your server is using much performance and this seems strange.

Seeing my email I sent to our customer translated with "blabla" here makes me kind of sad for I really wanted to help and solve problems. If your rare feedback is due to language differences you could have told me since I'm able to write in English as well. Such flaming behind my back isn't that nice.

However, I never got an answer to my question which plugins are installed and activated. Why not? As I see here one person who obviously has control over the gameserver did explain details about plugins installed. Why did I never get this information?

Another thing I wanted to know is for one diretory in your home directory: "UploadedMaps_Read_the_readme_inside". Directory's name suggests this directory being used as some kind of download domain. This would be a serious problem for this offends against license agreement. Traffic and bandwith costs money - don't know if you're aware of that fact. I just moved this directory to a place you can't access because there have been some accesses again today, and former accesses seem to have come from different locations.

Well, what is it you want? Have a smoothly running server. That's what I wanna help you with. If you don't want, farewell, see you at soccer's world championship in summer :lol:

Otherwise help me to sort out why your server is taking that much of our cpu. Right now your server has 15 players connected and uses 50 to 60 percent of a 2.4 ghz machine. Why? That's not what I'm used to from ut servers.

Maybe another kernel version would do better. I could just try copying your server to another machine with different kernel (less work than install new kernel since this is always a danger of server not coming up again - annoying when having nothing more than remote control). We can try to put things back in order but you have to_answer_when I'm questioning you.

That's it so far. Take it or leave it.

Sorry the comunication was a bit fuzzy every now and again this of course doesn't help things .

Kee to start things off

The Uploadedmaps directory

It was not used as a download space exactly it was more used incase people wanted new maps on the server that i could have the zipped / rarred maps so i could compress them and upload them to my website witch we use as a redirect for the downloads on the ut2004 server.
And i did indeed hear from Kamran that there where some strange ip's connecting and downloading from that .
As far as i know 6 or 7 people have acces to the server/ftp and well i think only 3 or 4 may actualy use it .
But if this is in some way violating some laws then it's no prob for us(me) not to do it like this.

With that explained i would like to explain what mods are currently running on the server .

I basicly took all the mods off at the start and then slowly added 2

So that way things are now is :

Talking mod installed and activated (this displays a little talking icon above your head when u type)
UAdminmod installed and activated (let's players correct the teams themselves by typing "teams")

And that's it mod wise at the moment
Both mods are small and have a very little or no impact on the servers performance .( so i have noticed)

Because this sunday (and basicly almost the whole last week) the server was running just fine with 20 players on it and the 2 little mods

But now yesterday the problems started again witch is probably related to the cpu usage since bandwith would not be a problem i presume .

The thing i do know witch can cause the higher cpu issue is either a crappy mod or too high network settings in ut2004

The mods are prety much ruled out because the didn't couse any problems before.

As for the network settings they are basicly standard
Netspeed is set to 10000
maxtickrate is set to 20

That's basicly all the info i can give ya
If u need more or more specific things just lemme know

As for keeping the server yes or no this in not my decision to make since Kamran rents it from u it's up to him what he wants to do i'm just trying to make it run as smooth as it can..

Well, I just moved the dirctory back where it was. Please minimize such usage, but it sounds ok. I consider this topic closes and there's everything ok as it is.

By the way: I wouldn't let 6 non-admins have access to admin-stuff, but that's your business, of course.

Sounds ok to me.

So I'll take the Onslaught mode as reason for cpu usage. Unfortunately no other customer has used this mod before so I'm not that familiar with the modes. Actually, we never had many ut servers.

I just got message that server will be stripped down to a 16 slot clan (=password protected) server from next month on - can you confirm this? I think problems would end then anyway, but I will just try the server with the other kernel. But not today, I'm working on a seminar for my university right now and have to finish a hand out until tomorrow.

Oh, I did a slight tuning at your server. Unfortunately, I had to reboot your server for taking effect. Never mind, hope it has some effect.

I noticed just changed it back :)

I believe that he wanted to keep the server at 20 for another month to see how things went (he will of course have to confirm this)


And as for the cpu usage

I know that Onslaught is the most cpu consuming gamemode there is in 2004
I'm not sure what the regular server specs would be for such a 20 slot server

And if ure willing to try another kernel that would be fine with me perhaps it will help (might be usefull infor for future ut2004 servers)

Ow i will remove the packed maps directory .. we will do it another way no biggy

After a great match last sunday evening, i had to look u guys up! :-) Your's
is one of the few 'larger' onslaught servers that pings well from my current
location, so it's a real pity that it lags ever so often.

It's none of my business ofcourse, but you might want to talk to the ppl at
titan (http://ut2004.titaninternet.co.uk/). They're a real friendly bunch,
and very experienced in running big UT2004 onslaught servers (used to
play there a lot). For one thing, their 32player *dedicated* 2Gig
opteron250 still can't always cut it, especially on some badly optimized
maps (which they then update with authors permission).

anyway, frag'ya later! :-P
