Carnage I had a hack attempt on our company board as well. It seems it all works thru registering as a new member and being admitted entrance right away. I noticed we have a new member called 'xxx'. At work the bitch was called 'freeporn'.
Please activate the option where an admin has to screen new members before they are let in. This will filter out these 'hackers' (exploiters is a better word).

Well the forum now is set to send a e-mail witch the person who registers had to activate .
I think with the admin activating it won't make much difference since u never realy know who someone is ..
Anyways it was no big deal and all fixed again .. also updated the phpboard to the latest version 2.0.17 so should be a good as it gets ..
Btw there are quite a few more site affected by this dude

It's quite easy to do. PHPBB is open source stuff so anyone with an interest in doing so can find an exploit.
The hacking isn't what amazes me, it's the way this guy covered his tracks that is. I would like to know how he did that

Better overall quality software, better tested releases, faster updates, usually freeware to name a few.
