Help with FPS

I heard a lot about TCP Tech knowlegde:), and was hoping somebody could help me with my FPS(frames per second).

Ill try to mention evrything that might be off importance, Im far from the biggest Comp wizz.

In ut2004 on assault particularly, my frames alaways drop down to 10-20. And i tryd evrything i can think off to fix it. The weird thing on Tam 6vs6 it dosent drop as much on assault 6vs6. I also noticed it is more fram drops in the beginning of game, like i have to play 10-15rounds in tam before it get better, although it never fully go away, after 10-15rounds it at least run good enough to play with, but in the begin it can be pretty annoying, a lot of drop in close combat. were camera stucks and almost displayed as slideshow pictures. However in assault it seems to be very bad frames all the way trough the game. It goes up and down from 10-80frames.

And as far as i can tell i have optimized evrything to run as smoothly as possible on the Nvidia Control Panel(giving me the most fps i can have).

I never had this problem with my previous grap card, Geforce 4 MX.

I also tryed something i saw in the forum by changing the MAXclientframes in the Ut ini, weird it seem to help for a week(tam never run so smoothly)., But after a week it all came back. And now it dosent help at all.

My specs
------------------------------
Manufacturer: FUJITSU SIEMENS
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.93GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 3072MB RAM
Hard Drive: 7 GB left only, but i doubt thats why, cause i had 50 GB & it was same prob
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition Sp2

Hi!

I got the same problem, but mine simply comes from my crappy hardware. Assault- and Onslaught-Maps are usually far more complex than the DeathMatch ones, which would explain why you mainly get the problems in the Assault maps.

However, with your hardware you shouldn't get any problems at all, at least performance-wise. But what I heard is that indeed the GeForce 8800 is slower in UT2004 than in UT3 due to some driver issues. Unfortunately, I don't have any more concrete information about it. There were just some players on the servers saying that one shouldn't buy a card with that chip to play UT2004.

Concerning the improving FPS rate during map play: It could possibly be that your PC isn't preloading all the sounds and textures when the map starts. I got this problem because of my low RAM. The game freezes when the PC accesses the HD to load something, for example the sound of a shooting tank. I always get it when an ONS game finishes and the announcer voice shall say "You have lost the map" or whatever. The core starts exploding, the game freezes for about 3 seconds, HD loads and then I hear the voice. :-P

When entering the ingame settings, go to GAME and check if the option PRELOAD ALL PLAYER SKINS at the right bottom is checked. Otherwise, this could be a source for the problem as described above. I couldn't find such an option for textures and sounds. Probably the game does this automatically, but there might be something in the UT2004.ini as well...

I have UT2k4 running ok on a Geforce 8800GTS. I used to have problems on a couple of TAM maps (columns seemed to cause fps problems, even square ones lol), but a driver change seems to have sorted that (I'm using 6.14.11.7516). FPS is always above 80 I think with the settings set pretty high.

I still get occasional glitches, on Cheops by Taz's corner for example, but at my age lag is probably biologically based :P

Hi,
remote analysis is always difficult, but here some guesses:
If you havent had problems with a Geforce 4 but with the 8800 running on the same system, then yes, this should be a driver issue. The card itself is far sufficient; I'm using a 8800GT too and dont have any problems. My driver version is 178.13 (on a Vista-System) with all settings as default. Check the nvidia download section: Is your driver the latest one? If yes, try reinstall it or use other driver versions, including new beta-drivers or older release ones. Driver tweaking is not necessary for UT; defaults shall do.

If this didn't solve the problem, then here some additional questions that may encircle the problem at the system or at the game:
- Run a 3D benchmark and compare the results with similiar systems. If there is a significant difference, there may be a problem with your hardware and/or drivers.
- Do you have the latest motherboard/chipset drivers?
- What did you change else on your system except for the graphics card?
- What is the windows task manager saying while playing, another process than UT consuming too much cpu load?
- The P4 CPUs of the old Netburst architecture have big heat development. Check the cpu temperature in the bios after having this problem; maybe it is being throttled.
- What else programs run while playing; are you sure not having a virus?
- When did this problem first occur, maybe after installing another program or after ut2004.ini-tweaking?
- Is UT the only program with these problems or are there other programs, especially games?
- About the harddrive: Is it working excessively while lagging?

Good luck, heinz

Is this online fps? How's your fps holding when you play offline assault? Granted, bots will steal processing power, but use the killbots command.

There are a number of settings you can go through, though..

Only weird issue I've had with my NVIDIA (GeForce 8500 GT) was semi-consistent rendering lags when the weapon was not hidden. Of course, no one usually plays with the weapon showing? :)

Hi,

I had a problem with ut3 on my radeon HD 2900.
I had vista x64. Bad fps drops when the map was large with open areas.
I found out that the drivers for my card where crap with vista and ut3.
So I changed back to xp, sortid I get 80-90 average.
If you do have vista maybe try to change to vista and update all drivers.
Some of these new g-cards seem to work differantly on xp and vista depends on the manufacturer.
Like coco said about sound, if you have a sound card make sure it is compatable with the g-card.
All in all tryed and tested is the way forward.
Dont know if that was any help but good luck.

Thx for all the tips, i will check out evrything:).

Also been google abit, and it realy seems to be a commen problem with Geforce 8800 GT + XP + Ut2004.
dident find anything useful last time.

To answer some questions

The prob started when i switched graph card. Dident make any other changes when prob started.
And its only on UT2004 i have that prob, i have Oblivion f.e and the grap card works great their, runs pretty smoothly.
No i dont have virus.
Same frame issue online/offline, but can run decent when 2vs2, or 3vs3. f.e.
None power consuming programs running in the background.

I will get back when ive tested many of the good advices:).

Thx again all:).

I use the 8800 GT too, without any probs. Do you install XP new when you switch the Graka? Have you done a benchmark? So you could see if its a probs with UT or your PC.

Sry been sick after sick for a month.

Ive been trying to fix this prob for closing to 7months now i belive.
And the more and more i search about it online, the more and more i belive ther is nothing i can do.

I done a benchmark yes, couldent find any prob anywhere.

Tryd the maxclientframes in ut ini, only seem to help a little bit for a little while, but quickly gets terrible again, no matter how high/low i set my fps.

Even tryed a old driver wich some recomended for 8800Gt if u had prob with ut2004, but no help.

Many has complainted to Nvidia with this prob it seems, but it seems like ther to lazy to fix it. I ofc tryed the latest driver update. And tryed evrything Grap/performance settings in UT and Nvidia Control panel.

I checked evrything on my pc that can be the cause of the prob. I havent found anything on my pc that will cause this prob. but i dont belive ther is something els then the Gt8800 who causes the prob.

I tryed so many things over the months i got trouble remember what i tryd lol, But i know ive goten a lot of suggestion, but nothing has worked.

Evryone who has this prob off what ive seen in other forums online etc. Ther is always the same, 8800GT + XP+ UT2004.

I tryed ofc all kinds of tweaking that i know and people told me. But it only seem to maybe help for 5-10min Then thers all the same again.

So for about a week ago, i replaced my grap card with my old Ati Radeon card And Ut2004 runs smoothly, not a single Fps drop/prob/lag. I was tired of the Fps keept droping down to 5-20 twice each sec.
I dont think its any solution to this prob, me has given up.

At least UT2004 runs smoothly again. Thx for help all tho.
