Yes, it's good that you're changing it. Cookies are no big problem usually, because they're only used to track your traces on the net (which I personally don't like, that's why I have them disabled). The problems come with JavaScript and Java (the latter is needed very rarely anyway these days).

You should really give NoScript and CookieSafe a try. Just get them via the Addons menu. I already posted how to do this here (including screenshot).
