found some useful info here :-
http://wiki.beyondunreal.com/wiki/Map_Optimization
"Every pickup on a map creates a channel when played on a server. The more channels on a server, the more lag there is overall on the server. Try to use fewer pickups on larger maps, and replace clustered pickups with a weapon locker."
I've added loads of mini health vials all over the map, maybe this was not such a good idea
I'll take em out and see what happens

I never saw that. Nice find Zepp. Yes, that may be your problem. Post the results please. Although, you did not have that many in there.

Oh, he had. Just take a look into the underground tunnel in the middle of the map!

Intelligent item placement should help so you can have more items but not the same amount of open channels.
Generally, the server decides what to send to clients (replicate), and everything NOT in direct line of sight to the player gets dropped after a short amount of time.
In other words, if there are 150 items behind a wall, you should NOT have open channels for them.
Well so much for theory, I am not that well versed with ut2k4 replication and I know it is largely different than Unreal One.

Again, the blocking volumes in UT2004 solve this problem. If placed and used correctly, they will prohibit the engine to drawing them, when not seen, or too far away to be seen.
