Coco, could you please explain how to make the cd. I have the Knoppix with 2 folders. The linux (Knoppix) is in the one folder with over 600 MB. The other is the boot. Can I copy the Boot folder insides, and then the Knoppix folder? I need to use a CD But I could take my DVD player out and put it in the other computer. Frank

Hi Frank!

Ehrm, what did you do? I don't know anything about folders... Normally, you just download the Knoppix ISO image, burn a CD from it (you know, in Nero, for example, you select "Burn disk image" from the "Recorder" menu) and then boot that CD. That's all!

Hi!

Just to be sure, Frank, you should download one of these two files (depending on what language you prefer - German or English).

This is a snapshot of the end of the download list of the University of Kaiserslautern when clicking at the [http] link (instead of [ftp]).

Thanks Coco, I got it right this time, and it even worked. I was in the menus, and looking around. Then the bios crashed on me. I just reset it, but I think we all know what this means? I will try to get another mother board here in the next couple of days.

Jochens computer is also still rebooting. I am ready to go through the roof.

Frank if you can't do it I'll take a week off or two, travel to Erlangen and fix your crap :P Just make sure you have plenty of spare parts or money to go shopping :) Also, make sure there is always beer in the fridge.

What I don't do are Linux installs (yet), because I know jack shit about that. But hey if you wanna try that I'll watch the show too ;-)

I take u up on your offer, Mr. Wolf. All except for the extra cash and parts, I am a bit short on those. But beer is always here, and plenty of spare. ;) I do know what I am doing, I thought, until this problem came up. It is just that I am not used to hardware breaking down on me. I have always bought new stuff when it came out, and after I totaled it up, I stopped doing that. Spare parts for computers, are the same for cars or anthing you buy these days. If you buy the individual components, it is more exspensive than buying the whole thing.

I still take your offer up, and am always here, (working, but here) and would love the company. Thanks. :D Frank

You're right about the spare parts, of course, but if you are able to determine just WHAT is causing the problem and replacing that, it will still be cheaper than buying a whole new comp ;) Also, this only applies to ready made computers, most "pros" assemble their own machines either way, so no savings possible single parts vs. complete machine.

I kinda live in something you could call a hardware lab at least in parts, since there are always one or two machines in more or less assembled state (f)lying around, and if something breaks in one computer, I just toss it out and replace it with a spare. I can't have days of outtimes, I need the machinery to function at all times. If worst comes to worst, I always have one fully operational complete replacement computer for the most important things at hand, if the spares don't help getting the damaged one back on.

Lemme know what times would be good for you, maybe a week in July? Due to my work it always takes some time before I can get off for more than a day or two. You were on my "to visit" list for a time, but now that I'm too late for your daugher (hehehe) I was figuring a damaged comp would be as good as any other reason :P

:D On the daughter. :)

You and all are always welcome. I can not tell you a time right now, but I know that I will be on vacation in August some time.

I have always built my systems myself, but since about 4 years, I gave up for one reason or another. I know allot, and can get around in the machine. I am sure that the mother board is down. It could be the on-board Grafics, or the BIOS itself, but something on the board died on me. I want to get this system up for a server, because this is an Athlon 2800, and the processor should be good. My daughter has an old celuron (SP) that she just traded for a Laptop. I could use that one, but we all know the Cons and Cons of the celuron (SP again) . I am getting there, but just need time. I have to start work tomorrow at 3 in the morning, so tonight was a bust. I have a few other things running, but I am willing to take a break from them to get this thing running. TTUS Frank

'aight, no pressure, July was just an idea ;-) We can do another time as well, but I need to know at least 2 weeks in advance otherwise I run the danger that I do not get permission to go on leave in time.

Hi Frank,
once I had a PC with similar problems, it freezed sporadically after years of fine working. It was the CPU having contact probs with its socket. Maybe dust or corrosion. Simple dis- and reassembling the CPU fixed that. Maybe u try this too b4 buying a new MoBo. Just little hope on this, but who knows...
You wrote it's an Athlon 2800 - is it a socket 939? If so, I have a spare ECS K8 nforce3-A939. I could send it to you, because there's something about the BIOS battery and the NIC and I won't ever use it anymore. But it would help figuring out whether it's ur MoBo being defect or not.
Would be a donation - interested? Greetings, heinz

Well I got into something like a fight with a work colleague. I therefore suspended myself for the last week in June/first week of July to take an outtime from work and clear my head. This would throw every plans for July to the winds anyway so now we have todo it later at any rate. Couldn't be helped :-S

@laborHeinz:
Nice offer.

@ LaborHeinz, I also did that with not just the CPU, but with everything. I have had the problem b-4 with the RAM and video card and thought that I would just "rebuild" everything. If it worked, it did not work for long. I have not done anything with it since last weekend. Your ofer is a very nice gesture indeed, and thanks. I will keep it in mind.

@ Wolf, I am sorry to hear that you also have to work with idiots that will not leave you alone while you are working. I have just about the same here. But I am bigger than most (if not all) of them, so I just start to raise my voice and they all go away. ;) Good luck, and if you have a few spare hours, come on up for a few hours and have a beer or 8, and we will throw the grill on.
