how to make maps?!

Post by Nosh »

Hey yall,
how is it goin? I hope your doing fine. =)
So its like this... I thought about creating some UT2k4 maps, but have no idea. I started just today and was able to create a single room with lights and I was able to run around in this room. Well thats fine. But now I created another room directly beside to old room. My problem is how to get a door or something into the walls, to get into the other room.
Can anybody of you map maker people help me?
would be awesome!
thx... =)

I don't fully understand what do you mean, but if its about connection between two rooms, then you need to create one smaller brush that will connect both rooms, subtract, textures and boom! you got it. If you want to have doors then in Static Mesh browser you need to look for proper SMesh (seek it in Humanoid Hardware, SHIPTECH hardware and few other package with "tech" name) but don't add it. Instead of it, just use the little button on lower left side of Interface, named Add Mover. If you click it, your SMesh appers as a mover (that is a moving object).
Now you have to set keypoints of his move (it is in Properties/Mover if Im not wrong). The keypoint 0 is first one which is place from where your mover starts its move. Now type Keypoint 1 and take your mover to the location its going to move and press Enter. Great! You have mover with its animation. Now type again 0 in Keypoint filed so its going back to its starting position. I hope you have understood it. If not, then ask me.

i aint a mapper (only tryed few times)
but for normale open doors it's easyer to just make 1 big base room en put walls in it to create the rooms and @ doors just leave the wall away where they gonna be

but this is ofc whitout the fancy moving door =P

:)

It is just as MBB said. Make 2 large rooms, leave a space inbetween, and then subtract a smaller "door" from that space.

You could get some great tuterals from www.3dbuzz.com. You have to register, but it is worth it. "Buzz" has made a bunch of videos, that will help you through the building process. :)

And I will be able to answer questions, but ATM, I can not do much more. Marcin is now back, and Kobra is also an active map maker.

Yes, it does take awhile to make a map. But do not give up. It is more fun for me to make a map, than it is to play. :)

There are a few things that you should watch out for. Try to line your "boxes" up, so that the "snap" together. If you run into a problem with them aligning, try deintersecting the building brush. This will get the brush to fit the other brushes already there. But, be careful not to make too many poligons (surfaces). This will slow the computer, and the game down.

These are called portals. Make a "sheet" the size of the whole in you wall. Take the same texture as your wall. Go to "add special brush", and add a "non solid brush". Make sure the "two sided" check mark is checked. This should work. :)
